The Mapuche conflict is a long date struggle. It reemerge with strength after the transition to democracy, in 1990. Their demans are, mainly, about three matters: they want to have their own laws, have theirs ancesters' lands back and to keep their cultural identity.
Because of this, there has been very violent confrontations between them and land-owners or with the police. This situation leads to trial of the people involved in the attacks.
For the last weeks, 34 members of the mapuche community have been in a hunger strike. The main reason to make this, is the law that condemns the terrorits behaviors. The mapuche claim the penalties are too high compared to the rest. Also that the law has not been properly applied, they feel discriminate.
The authorities tried to convince them to abandon the strike. Only 82 days later, 24 of them gave up. They did it because the government and the Congress are working on the improvement of the anti-terrorist law.
Now, we just have to wait for, hopefully, the end of the conflict, because too many people have been hurt on this endless problem.
